Another new business is opening on Locke Street South. Stefan Witt is planning to open The Gym on Locke, at the corner of Locke and Chatham streets, in late January. Stefan is formerly a district vice-president for the Alliance Fitness Corporation, which owned the Family Fitness and Exclusively Women’s centres, and has worked in the health and fitness industry for nearly 25 years.
A resident of the Locke Street area, he bought his building – which also houses a variety store and candle shop – last March with a view to opening a boutique-style fitness centre upstairs.
The centre will occupy 2,400 square feet of space and have state-of-the-art cardio equipment as well as strength resistance equipment and free weights. It will offer a limited membership of no more than 400, month-to-month memberships, and be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Members will have access to the facility through a carded entry system. Staff will be on site from Monday through Saturday, along with personal trainers to work with members on site and in the neighbourhood.
In addition to offering gym workouts, the club will organize a running club and cycling club. A new website is being developed at www.thegymonlocke.com. “Our club will appeal mostly to neighbourhood clientele,” Stefan says. “Already we have more than 100 people registered.”

Kelly McFeeters, a Burlington chartered accounting student, was one of only 15 Ontario students to make the prestigious Honour Roll for top marks on this year’s Canada-wide Uniform Evaluation (UFE). The UFE, written in September, is a national, three-day evaluation that assesses competencies required to achieve a Chartered Accountant designation. According to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario, this province had a record 1,184 successful UFE writers this year.
