A new 2009 special edition proof silver dollar, designed by local artist Jason Bouwman, was released by the Royal Canadian Mint last week. Jason is the principal of Burlington's Compass Creative. The coin commemorates 100 years of powered flight in Canada.
Bouwman's design was chosen after the mint invited artists to submit concepts. It depicts the silhouette of a young person running with arms outstretched, casting a shadow of an aircraft in flight.
This is the second time one of Bouwman's designs has appeared on a silver dollar. Last year, he designed a special edition proof silver dollar commemorating the centennial of the Canadian mint.

Maybe it's a result of the stresses caused by the economic downturn. Maybe it's due to the shortage of family physicians in Ontario. Or maybe it's just that people are increasingly turning away from traditional medicine and embracing holistic medicine. In any event, two holistic practices have opened recently in Stoney Creek and are building up clientele.
Holistic Therapies at Trinity Natural Health Centre, 9 Lake Ave. S., is run by Natashia Guidi. She is a homeopathic doctor and a doctor of medical heilkunst (defined as the art of making a person whole -- emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually).
Over at 360 Highway 8, Michael Frosina has opened a naturopathic practice. Frosina is a registered naturopathic doctor and offers services such as acupuncture/Chinese medicine, botanical medicine, homeopathic medicine and cosmetic acupuncture.
Tricia Hellingman is president of Hellingman Communications, a Hamilton-based public relations and marketing agency. You can e-mail her at thellingman@hellingman.com. BizzBuzz runs every other Friday.
